Nobody should try to imagine what the world without design would look like. Design has become an important element that beautifies and color sour world. Designers all around the world have significantly contributed to the look of our living spaces and environments through their creative design thinking and meaningful artworks.
However, there are not many opportunities for designers to engage with other fellow designers, share design ideas among them and exhibit their design works in an established international meeting, especially in the Asia-Pacific region. Most of the meetings are locally organized, which creates walls between designers all over the world.
With spirit of celebrating the important and significant role of design in answering most recent everyday issues, Industrial Engineering Department of Universitas Katolik Parahyangan organizes a bi-annual event, named Asia Pacific Design Challenge (APDeC). In this event, not only designer and design practitioners, but also students, researcher, academia as well as design enthusiast, could collaborate, discuss, share, and sharpen their skills and expertise in design by several delightful international activities.
First APDeC was held on 23rd to 25th of October 2013 in Bandung with a theme of “The beauty of difference: Saving our cultural heritage.” During the events, bachelor students across Asia Pacific participated in a two-day design championship.
APDeC 2015 was held for the second time on 4th – 5th November 2015 in Bandung in the form of Colloquium and Workshop. By theme of APDeC 2015 was “Design for Well-being”, the colloquium was discussing latest trends in design for well-being from Dr. Patrick Jordan (UK), Prof. Ellen Yi-Luen Do (USA-Singapore), Dr. Markus Hartono (Indonesia) and Dr. Johanna Hariandja (Indonesia).
This year, 3rd APDeC 2017, themed “A Sustainable Future by Design”, will be held in 1st – 4th November 2017 in Bandung under different activities which emphasized in the empowerment of design expertise. The activities are serial workshops and one-day students design challenge. We expect total 100 international participants, especially Asia Pacific, will join in this event.
